Our work consists of two programmes – the Academy and NATA Productions.

The Academy contributes to our mission by reaching 25-30 disadvantaged but committed young people each year with:
• access to Higher Education– not only training in acting, voice, dance and singing, but also in literacy, computer skills, life skills and entrepreneurial skills, resulting in an accredited NQF level 5 qualification.
• remedies for educational gaps - special provisions are made for students with poor literacy and numeracy skills, to prepare students for both the working world and for further study.
• nurturing human capital - nothing is more important than helping young people develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to become contributing citizens.

1,200 hours of tuition take place over four terms, from 8h30 to 16h00 each week-day. The training includes practical projects and job shadowing as well as theoretical knowledge, and students create a body of essays and written tests, portfolios and practical test results.

Students come predominantly from the Cape Flats area of Cape Town which have the following demographics:
• 97% of the population are black or coloured
• 74% of residents over the age of 20 have not completed High School; only 2% have a tertiary qualification
• the average household has an income of R3,000 per month, and consists of 4 people
In 2007/08 these areas accounted for 66% of all murders in Cape Town, 53% of reported rapes, and 42% of drug-related crime, and other difficulties include high levels of HIV infection, and poor housing and sanitation.

NATA Productions contribute to our mission through:
• vibrant creative projects that offer employment to our graduates and others within the performance industry
• the use of theatre to contribute to social awareness, debate and development
• contributing to the growth of audiences and the direction of contemporary South African theatre
